The Speakership Election Amendment has been rejected, with 47.37% voting Aye on 19 valid votes — equivalent to nine ballots in favour and ten against.

The amendment would have tweaked the condition under which the Speaker Pro Tempore is called upon to preside over the inaugural session of a new Senate, in place of the Vice President. It is a narrow question of procedure, and it drew a correspondingly narrow electorate: 19 valid votes, against the 83 cast in the presidential election announced the same night.

Constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority. Even a clear plurality of those who turned out was nowhere near enough.

It was the first of two constitutional amendments to fail inside a week. The second, Article 1 of the Get alts out of the Senate Amendment, was rejected days later on 29.82% — a far heavier defeat for a far larger change.
